Tower of st. Nicolaus co-cathedral in Prešov.

There is no doubt St. Nicolaus co-cathedral (acclaimed 09.08.2008) is dominant construction of historical part of Presov (eastern Slovakia). The co-cathedral belongs to biggest sacral constructions in Slovakia. 54,70 m long, 34,45 m wide. Internal part is 16 m high. Tower is 71 m high. Co-cathedral rose by rebuilding of chapel in the fourtieth in 14. century. It was rebuilt to late-gothic style in 1502-1515. Ján Brengyszeyn, stone-cutter in Presov, directed the rebuilding in 1502-1505. It was ceremonially sacred in autumn 1510. During the centuries it burnt out (1685, 1711, 1780, 1788, 1886, 1887).

Three versions of co-cathedral are captured on historical postcards from Ing.Rudolf Vaškovič private archive.Unique photographic picture made by Presov photographic votary Karol Divald (1830 – 1897) is from 1867.

Looking at the co-cathedral your attention is drawn definitely by the tower. Original construction of tower was finished in 1515. The tower underwent several rebuildings of which the roof changed the most. Its present version was reached by Viennese builder Fridrich Schulek in 1903.

It is possible for visitors to look from tower view terrace at historical part of Presov and its surrounding.

Historical part of Presov, its surrounding and also the tower interior (historical photos, original statues of saints from 1734 – author Štefan Griming, staircase, clock mechanism, bells) you can see on another photos.
